Youth hockey costs between a few hundred and several thousand dollars per year, according to Stickhandling PRO. One breakdown by level puts house league at $1,000 to $3,000 annually and travel hockey at $3,000 to $8,000 per year, before additional travel expenses. That source is a retailer that sells hockey apparel, so treat its ranges as estimates.

Quick version

Youth hockey cost by level

The ranges below come from Sandbar Hockey Company, which sells hockey apparel and lifestyle gear for hockey families. They are estimates, not audited data. Your club's fee sheet beats any range on this page.

Level Cost range Source
House league, per year $1,000 to $3,000 Sandbar Hockey Company
First-year equipment $500 to $1,200 Sandbar Hockey Company
Total first year including equipment about $1,500 to $4,000 Sandbar Hockey Company
Travel hockey, per year, before additional travel $3,000 to $8,000 Sandbar Hockey Company
Travel hockey, everything included $6,000 to $10,000 Sandbar Hockey Company
AAA hockey, per year $8,000 to $20,000+ Sandbar Hockey Company
Tier III junior hockey, per season $5,000 to $15,000 Sandbar Hockey Company

The jump from house league to travel is the one that surprises families. The travel figure of $3,000 to $8,000 leaves out extra travel costs. The $6,000 to $10,000 figure is the one that includes them.

What gear costs

Gear is where first-year costs pile up. The two sources we read do not agree on every price, which is normal for estimates.

My take: buying used for fast-growing kids is the obvious place to cut, and the helmet prices above show the gap. That is our opinion, not a sourced fact. Check your league's rules on equipment before you buy.

Fees and extras

Registration varies by rink. One example from Stickhandling PRO: Chicago Blackhawks Community Ice Rink registration is just under $200 for brand new toddlers and over $300 for more advanced youth players. That is one rink, not a national average.

Extras are optional but common. Sandbar lists these:

Who is paying these bills

Cost shapes who plays. Stickhandling PRO reports that only 4 percent of hockey players come from households making less than $25,000 per year. It also says over 50 percent of players come from families making more than $100,000 annually. We could not trace the underlying survey from that page, so read those figures as a rough signal.

What a tournament weekend adds

Travel hockey means tournaments, and tournaments mean hotels, food and gas. Hotel rates change by city and date, so use current numbers. For a dated reference point, Stickhandling PRO cites an average US hotel room of $130 per night before the Covid-19 pandemic. It also says the average domestic flight cost $359 in 2019. Both are old. Three nights at that old hotel average would be 3 times $130, or $390, before food and gas.

Some events require you to book through the tournament's hotel list. Others do not. The rule is in each event's own documents, and we quote it on each tournament page with the date we checked. Our guide to what stay-to-play means explains the term. Our trip cost guide walks through the weekend budget.

Our homepage lists hockey events under its next-30-days Book Anywhere section. As of our check on Oct 31, 2026, it shows the Port Huron Silver Stick Regional in Fraser, MI, Nov 5 to Dec 6, 2026. It also shows the Albert Lea Bantam C Tournament in Albert Lea, MN, Nov 6 to 8, 2026, marked hotel suggested. The full list is on our Book Anywhere page. Confirm the current rule on the event page before you book.

How much does it cost to play hockey

For most families, this search means the same thing as the youth question, so the table above applies. House league sits at the low end, and travel, AAA and junior levels sit above it. Junior hockey is the top of our sourced range: Tier III junior hockey can cost $5,000 to $15,000 per season.

We did not find sourced adult hockey prices in our research, so we are not giving a number for adult leagues. Ask the league or rink for its fee sheet.

Hastings youth hockey

The City of Hastings, Minnesota, lists the Hastings Hockey Association as a youth athletic association offering camps and leagues. The city's athletics page does not show youth hockey prices. We are not quoting a fee for it. Contact the association for current registration costs and ask what is included.

Hockey nationals 2027

USA Hockey says it has conducted the country's ice hockey national championship tournaments since 1938. It also says more than 7,500 players compete across its classifications. The 2027 dates it announced:

Division Dates Location listed
High School March 17-21, 2027 Amherst, N.Y.
Girls Tier I (14U, 16U, 19U) March 30-April 4, 2027 Green Bay, Wis.
Youth Tier I divisions March 30-April 4, 2027 Not shown in our notes

The announcement gives dates and sites, not costs. It does not state a hotel rule, so we are not stating one here. When housing details appear, we quote them on the event page with the date we checked. If you want a heads-up, our email alerts are free.

Hermantown hockey association

Hermantown Hockey is the site of Hermantown Amateur Hockey, a youth hockey organization in Minnesota. The page we reviewed shows game schedules and general information about the organization. It lists no registration costs or fees. For what a season costs, ask the association directly.

What to ask a club before you sign up

  1. What is the full season fee, and what does it cover?
  2. Are ice time, jerseys and tournament entry fees included?
  3. How many tournaments does the team plan, and where?
  4. Does the team require a specific hotel at any event? Ask for the written rule.
  5. Are there fundraising or volunteer requirements?
  6. Is there a payment plan or a scholarship option?

In our view, question 4 is the one parents skip most. This is our judgment, not a sourced fact. Hotel costs can dwarf a registration fee over a season, and the answer should be in writing. Our guide on how to read a housing policy shows what to look for.

Plan the weekend, not just the season

A season fee is only part of the bill. Before you commit to a tournament, find its published housing rule and your options. Check your tournament to see the rule we quoted, the date we checked it and the hotels by drive time.
