How we score housing: the Housing Fairness method
The Housing Fairness score runs from 0 to 100. It uses only the tournament's published housing rules. It never uses commission data, parent ratings or what a tournament pays or asks.
The formula
Start at 100. Subtract the points below. The score never goes under 0.
| Rule | Points |
|---|---|
| Hotel required | -40 |
| Hotel suggested only | -10 |
| No local exemption | -10 |
| Local exemption radius under 30 miles | -5 |
| Staying with family not allowed | -10 |
| Monetary penalty for booking elsewhere | -15 |
| Warning or loss of standing for booking elsewhere | -10 |
| Booking deadline more than 45 days before the event | -5 |
| No-show or cancel fee beyond the hotel's own policy | -5 |
| Rebates or fees to the tournament not disclosed, when a hotel is required | -5 |
If the housing rule is unclear, the score shows as "Not scored."
How the rows apply
The exemption, family, penalty, deadline and cancel rows apply when a hotel is required or suggested. A tournament with no hotel requirement scores 100.
Each tournament page shows the inputs next to the score. Every input comes from a rule we quote and link, with the date we checked it.
Book Anywhere badge
A tournament earns the Book Anywhere badge when its official rules say teams may book any hotel. We link the source. The badge cannot be bought, and a tournament cannot ask us to remove it unless the rule changes.
Disputes
If you run a tournament and think a score is wrong, point us to the published rule. We fix verified errors within 48 hours. See the corrections page.
Independence
We rank hotels by drive time to the venue. We do not rank by commission.
