How the Trip Cost Calculator Works

Updated Oct 14, 2026

How the trip cost calculator works

The calculator adds four things for one family: a share of the entry fee, hotel nights, gas, and meals. Every number is an assumption you can change. We show all of them.

The formula

Total per family = entry fee share + hotel + gas + meals

1. Entry fee share

Entry fee share = entry fee / families per team.

The entry fee is the team price from the tournament's official page, with its source and checked date. Families per team defaults to 15. Change it to match your roster. A smaller number raises your share.

2. Hotel

Hotel = nights x nightly rate.

Pick the number of nights and a rate. The rate is the hotel's price for your dates. Block rates appear only when the tournament publishes them. Taxes and resort fees may not be included, so check the final total at booking.

3. Gas

Gas = round-trip miles / mpg x gas price.

Drive distance comes from OSRM. Defaults are 22 mpg and $3.20 per gallon. Both are editable. Use your own vehicle's mpg and today's local price.

4. Meals

Meals = meals per person per day x people x days.

You set the dollars per person per day, the number of people and the number of days. Rink food adds up quickly, so adjust it to how your family eats.

What is not included

Worked example

These are example numbers only. They do not describe a real tournament.

Input Example value
Entry fee $1,500 per team
Families per team 15 (default)
Hotel nights 2
Nightly rate $140
Round-trip miles 220
Miles per gallon 22 (default)
Gas price $3.20 per gallon (default)
Meals $25 per person per day, 4 people, 3 days
Line Math Cost
Entry fee share $1,500 / 15 $100.00
Hotel 2 x $140 $280.00
Gas 220 / 22 x $3.20 $32.00
Meals $25 x 4 x 3 $300.00
Total $712.00

In this example, meals cost more than the hotel. Edit any line and the total updates.

Comparing tournaments

You can put two tournaments side by side. Each uses its own entry fee, drive distance and hotel rate, with the same assumptions for the rest. That keeps the comparison fair.

Where inputs come from

Entry fees and rates come from official sources and show their checked date. Drive distances are computed with OSRM from OpenStreetMap data. Defaults are ours, and we label them as defaults. See the editorial policy for how facts are checked, and corrections if a number looks wrong.
