Of the 639 tournaments we checked as of Oct 16, 2026, 124 require the tournament hotel and 24 say you can book anywhere. The other 491 only suggest it (135) or have no clear rule we could verify (356).

What do the 639 rules add up to?

Hotel required is the largest firm answer, at 124 of 639 tournaments, as of Oct 16, 2026. Hockey is most of the pile, so the sport split matters.

Sport Checked Hotel required Book Anywhere Suggested Unclear
Hockey 496 31 5 122 338
Softball 33 26 0 0 7
Baseball 42 25 13 0 4
Volleyball 28 23 2 1 2
Lacrosse 18 6 0 12 0
Soccer 18 9 4 0 5
Basketball 4 4 0 0 0
All 639 124 24 135 356

Softball and volleyball lean hard toward required. Hockey is mostly unclear, because many hockey hosts publish a hotel list without saying it is mandatory. We count those as unclear, not as free to book anywhere.

When can you book your own hotel?

You can when the host's page says so. As of Oct 16, 2026, that is 24 of 639 tournaments in our data, 13 of them baseball.

Port Huron's Silver Stick Regional says "You choose. We are not stay to play." Pensacola Beach World Series Week 1 goes further and suggests VRBO or Airbnb. Read the host's wording, since some Book Anywhere pages still push a partner. The JVA World Challenge says it has no stay to play policy but teams are "encouraged" to book through TTS. Encouraged is not required.

What does "required" usually mean?

It usually means a distance trigger plus a penalty. Of the 124 required tournaments, 56 have a penalty recorded as of Oct 16, 2026.

The Gopher State Presidents Cup applies to teams whose home rink is "more than 70 miles" away. Its penalty reads: "Failure to comply will result in expulsion from the tournament, and registration fees will not be refunded." PGF is a fee instead: "subject to a $800 housing buyout fee." Some rules count rooms. The Florida volleyball rule wants "a minimum of 4 room nights per day of the event." Sorting out who gets the rebate is a separate question, covered in rebates explained.

Are there exemptions?

Often yes, and they are narrow. Of the 124 required tournaments, 70 list at least one, and 5 mention staying with family or friends.

The Florida Regional 18s Qualifier lists "Staying with a friend or family member who lives within 75 miles of the convention center." It also lists a team practice facility within 75 miles, and a hotel points stay that is free. Windy City's volleyball qualifier names a 50 mile commuter exemption. Distance is the common one. If your page lists none, there is nothing to ask for. If it lists one, ask the director in writing.

How do you check your tournament's rule?

Read the host's own housing page, not a third-party summary. Do it before you pay anything, and write down the date you read it.

Look for three things. First, the rule sentence and who it covers. Second, the distance line, such as 70 or 75 miles. Third, the penalty line. Rules change, so a screenshot with a date helps if the page moves. Our guide to reading a housing policy walks through a sample, and the stay-to-play guide defines the terms.
