As of Oct 19, 2026, 52 of the 287 live youth tournaments in our data that start Nov 1 to Dec 31 require booking through the tournament. Eight say Book Anywhere.
Last updated Oct 27, 2026. Each record has its own checked date, Oct 14 to 19, 2026. Hosts change pages, so recheck before you pay.
How do the 287 split?
Here is the split by what the host page says, as of the checked dates:
- Required: 52 (18%)
- Book Anywhere: 8
- Suggested: 90
- Unclear: 137
I counted every live record with a first start date from Nov 1 to Dec 31, 2026. An event with several weekends counts once, by its first weekend. The script and its output are saved with this post.
Suggested is not Book Anywhere. The host points to hotels and states no rule. Unclear means the page says nothing either way, and I do not read that as a yes or a no.
Does the sport change the answer?
Yes, a lot. Hockey is 242 of the 287 events, and only 19 of those are required, 2 are Book Anywhere, 90 are suggested and 131 are unclear.
The other 45 events look different. 33 are required, 6 are Book Anywhere and 6 are unclear, with none suggested.
| Sport | Events | Required | Book Anywhere | Suggested | Unclear |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hockey | 242 | 19 | 2 | 90 | 131 |
| Baseball | 28 | 20 | 5 | 0 | 3 |
| Soccer | 5 | 4 | 1 | 0 | 0 |
| Softball | 5 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 2 |
| Lacrosse | 4 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Volleyball | 2 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
| Basketball | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
The non-hockey sample is small, so read it as a snapshot of what we have verified, not a national rate.
Does the state change the answer?
Minnesota has 179 events in the window and 10 are required. Wisconsin has 47 and none are required. Florida has 29 and 22 are required.
Four Florida events say Book Anywhere and 3 are unclear. For the hockey-only view, see our Minnesota and Wisconsin Nov and Dec list.
What does a Book Anywhere rule look like?
Two examples, both checked in October 2026. The wording is short, so it is quoted whole.
Port Huron Silver Stick Regional (hockey, Michigan, first weekend Nov 5 to 8, 2026): "You choose. We are not stay to play" (host page, checked Oct 15, 2026). Our page is here.
Ripken Aberdeen Veterans Day Tournament (baseball, Maryland, Nov 6 to 8, 2026): "Is it required to stay at a Ripken Partner Hotel? Events at The Ripken Experience do not have stay-to-play requirements." (Ripken FAQ, checked Oct 16, 2026). Our page is here.
What does a required rule look like?
Three examples, each from a different sport. The host wording is exact.
North Florida Honor Veteran's Weekend (baseball, Jacksonville, Nov 7 to 8, 2026): "When booking your travel and lodging arrangements for North Florida Honor Veteran’s Weekend, cities are now requiring non-local teams to book through our USSSA platform for accurate event reporting." (host page, checked Oct 18, 2026). The page does not define local. Our page is here.
Las Vegas Qualifier, Premier Girls Fastpitch (softball, Nov 7 to 8, 2026): "THIS IS A STAY-TO-PLAY EVENT. PLEASE DO NOT wait to book your rooms. Hotel links WILL EXPIRE 3 WEEKS PRIOR to entry dead line. If your team plans on attending this qualifier, you MUST book your rooms prior to the dead line OR submit buyout payment." (host page, checked Oct 15, 2026).
The same page lists a $750 buy-out fee. Our page is here.
Gold Cup (lacrosse, Delaware, Nov 7 to 8, 2026): "All non-commuting teams participating in the tournament MUST (as a condition of acceptance) make all hotel accommodations using our tournament housing services." (host page, checked Oct 15, 2026). No mileage cutoff is printed. Our page is here.
For what hosts charge when a team books elsewhere, see Stay-to-Play Penalties, Quoted. For distance exemptions, see Stay to Play Exemptions and Mileage Rules.
What should a parent do with this?
If your event is on the required list, read the host page today and ask your manager who is booking. The first required events start Nov 6, 2026.
- Ask how room nights are counted and when the hotel link closes.
- Ask whether the team qualifies for any exemption the page prints.
- If your event is suggested or unclear, ask the organizer in writing whether other hotels are allowed.
Our Housing Fairness score counts a required hotel rule as a cost. The stay-to-play guide explains the term, and booking your own hotel has questions to ask.
