Club volleyball qualifiers do not share one housing rule. We read the official pages for six events. One sets a minimum of 4 room nights per day. One applies its rule only to teams traveling more than 60 miles. One says it has no stay-to-play policy at all. Your club's circuit name tells you very little. The event page tells you everything.

Below are the quotes, the dates we checked them, and the questions to ask your club director before you pay an entry fee. We checked every page on October 15, 2026. Housing rules change by season, so treat each one as a snapshot.

Is stay-to-play common in volleyball?

Yes, according to the trade press. Sports Destinations, a publication for event planners, quoted Nic Collins of HBC Event Services in March 2024: "Stay-to-play is now being used in the majority of all major tournaments." (Sports Destinations) That is one executive's description of tournaments in general, not a volleyball count. We did not find a published national number for volleyball qualifiers, and we are not going to invent one.

Team Travel Source, a housing company that works with many volleyball events, defines it this way: teams and athletes "must stay in one of the official hotels set up in the official tournament housing block." (Team Travel Source) It also says official block rates "will not cost more" than booking separately. That is the vendor's claim. Compare the totals yourself.

What do the actual qualifier pages say?

Here is the side-by-side. Every cell comes from the linked official page.

Event Dates on page Housing rule as written Where the minimum is stated
Florida Fest Junior National Qualifier Jan 23 to 25, 2027, Orlando Stay-to-play with room night minimum, four listed exemptions, no attrition clauses On the page
Lone Star Regional Championships Apr 25 to 26, 2026 Stay-to-play for teams traveling more than 60 miles Not published
JVA World Challenge Apr 9 to 11, 2027, Louisville JVA says it has no stay-to-play policy, encourages booking through its partner Not applicable
OVR events at Cedar Point Dec 2024 to May 2025 listing Stay-to-play for OVR teams more than 90 miles away Not published
AAU Junior Olympic Games 2023 Participants "should use" advertised hotels, exemption form available Not published
Sunshine Classic Girls Junior National Qualifier Mar 19 to 21, 2027 Housing link only for teams in "Ok to Pay" status Not published

Florida Fest: the most detailed policy we found

The 2027 Florida Fest page says: "Each team must book a minimum of 4 room nights per day of the event." For a 3 day event that is 12 room nights. For a 2 day event it is 8.

The deadline is stated too. Housing requirements must be met by "December 23, 2026 at 3:00pm." Teams that miss it "will be dropped and wait list teams will be given notice of entry."

The page lists four exemptions:

  1. Loyalty points that cover "an entirely FREE stay."
  2. A team practice facility within 75 miles of the venue.
  3. Staying with a friend or family member who lives within 75 miles.
  4. A military or government rate, accepted "for an individual reservation."

It also says: "Teams/Clubs will not be required to sign attrition clauses." For what attrition means and why it matters, see our attrition explainer.

Lone Star: distance decides

The Lone Star Regional Championships page (dated April 25 to 26, 2026) reads: "This is a stay to play event. EM2 Housing will book through Advanced Event Systems. Any team traveling further than 60 miles must secure a minimum number of rooms through EM2 Housing. Rooms booked directly through hotels will not apply."

Two details matter. The number of rooms is not on the page. And rooms you book directly "will not apply" toward it. That event date has passed, so ask your club for the current season's page.

JVA World Challenge: the one that says it has no rule

The JVA page says: "JVA does not have a stay to play policy; however, teams and families are encouraged to book their hotel accommodations through TTS." Housing opened October 14, 2026 at 11 A.M. CT for the April 9 to 11, 2027 event in Louisville, Kentucky.

Notice the word "encouraged." Compare it to the language on the other pages. That difference is the whole point of reading each one.

OVR: two policies at two facilities

The OVR page separates a "Stay to Play Policy" from a "Stay and Save Policy." The first says: "Teams must stay in the predesignated hotel block provided for the event." It applies only at events hosted by Cedar Point Sports Facility, and the page ties it to OVR teams located more than 90 miles away.

The second says teams "are encouraged to stay in the hotels listed" at events at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. The page lists events from December 2024 to May 2025, so it is a dated snapshot.

AAU Junior Olympic Games: a different AAU event

This one needs a caveat. The page we opened is for the multi-sport AAU Junior Olympic Games in Des Moines in 2023, not the AAU volleyball national championships. We could not open a current AAU volleyball housing page, so we are not describing it here.

What the 2023 page says is still a useful example of wording. "In order to participate in the 2023 AAU Junior Olympic Games, participants should use hotel accommodations as advertised by the local Host." It adds: "If your team or athlete is local or not planning to stay at one of the recommended properties, you must fill out a Housing Exemption Form." The cutoff for negotiated rates was July 17, 2023. (Catch Des Moines)

Sunshine Classic: housing is tied to your entry status

The USA Volleyball page for the March 19 to 21, 2027 qualifier says: "Only teams in an Ok to Pay status will receive a link to book housing. Teams that are in a Pending or Waitlist status on AES will NOT have access to housing." Team Travel Source is the housing provider. The excerpt we read does not state a room minimum or exemption. Ask for the full housing policy.

What did we not find?

We also tried to confirm housing language for the Big South Qualifier. We could not open an official page with housing rules, so we left it out. Absence from this article does not mean it has no rule. Check its page.

What patterns show up across the pages?

  • Distance is the usual exemption. Lone Star uses 60 miles, Florida Fest uses 75, OVR at Cedar Point uses 90. Three events, three numbers.
  • Minimums are often unpublished. Only Florida Fest put its number on the page we read.
  • Booking direct may not count. Lone Star says rooms booked directly "will not apply."
  • Entry status and housing can be linked. Florida Fest drops non-compliant teams. Sunshine Classic gates the housing link on status.
  • Wording differs. "Must," "should," and "encouraged" appear on different pages and mean different things.

What should I ask my club director before the season?

Your club probably handles the room count, but you pay the bill. Put these in writing:

  • Which qualifiers are on our schedule, and which are stay-to-play?
  • What is the room night minimum for each, and who counts it, the club or the families?
  • What is the housing deadline, and what happens to entry if we miss it?
  • Is there a distance or loyalty points exemption, and who verifies it?
  • Are attrition clauses or deposits involved?
  • What is the cancellation policy on our rooms?

Our guide to reading a housing policy explains each term. If you want to ask politely for an exemption the rules allow, see how to ask. Frequently asked questions

Do all volleyball qualifiers require you to stay in the official hotel block?

No. The pages we read differ. Florida Fest and the Lone Star Regional Championships call themselves stay-to-play events. JVA's World Challenge page says JVA has no stay-to-play policy and only encourages booking through its housing partner. Read the specific event page, not the circuit name.

How many hotel rooms does a volleyball team have to book?

It depends on the event. The 2027 Florida Fest Junior National Qualifier page says each team must book a minimum of 4 room nights per day of the event, which is 12 for a 3 day event. Other pages say only that a minimum number applies and do not publish it.

Can you be exempt from a volleyball stay-to-play rule?

Some events publish exemptions. Florida Fest lists loyalty points for a fully free stay, a practice facility or relatives within 75 miles, and a military or government rate. Lone Star applies its rule only to teams traveling further than 60 miles. Ask the event to confirm your case in writing.

What happens if my club misses the housing deadline?

The Florida Fest page says teams that do not comply by the deadline will be dropped and wait list teams notified. Other pages do not state a penalty. Ask the housing company what happens to the entry fee before you pay it.

Where do I find a qualifier's housing rules?

Open the event page, then the housing or hotel tab, then the housing partner's page. Look for the words stay to play, room nights, exemption, deadline, attrition and 'Ok to Pay.' Rules can change season to season, so check the date on the page.

Check your tournament

Look up the housing rule for the event your team is entering, with the rule quoted and the date we checked it. Or start with the tournaments that let you book any hotel.
