As of Oct 15, 2026, 19 of the 358 live Minnesota youth hockey tournaments in our data are marked required for hotels. Here is who they are and what the hosts wrote.
How many Minnesota tournaments require the hotel block?
Of 358 live Minnesota youth hockey tournaments for 2026-27, 19 are marked required as of Oct 15, 2026. That is about 5 percent.
Here is the full count from our records:
- Required: 19
- Suggested: 108
- Not required: 1
- Unclear: 230
Each count comes from the stay-to-play status on the tournament record. Our records were checked Oct 14 and Oct 15, 2026. Hosts change pages, so recheck before you book.
What do the status words mean?
Required means the host page says teams must use certain hotels or a booking system. Suggested means the host points to hotels but does not say you must use them. Not required means the host says so in as many words.
We only mark a tournament required when the host page says it. We never mark one required because other events at the same rink do it.
Our Housing Fairness score uses the same statuses. Read the stay-to-play guide if the term is new to your team.
Which Minnesota tournaments are required?
Nineteen events, from five hosts, as of Oct 15, 2026. Each host's wording is quoted exactly as we stored it, with the host page linked.
Bloomington Jefferson Youth Hockey (5 events)
The host rule for all five: "All Bloomington Tournaments are Stay to Play. All visiting teams must stay at one of the sponsoring hotels." The same page defines out-of-town teams as those 75 or more miles from Bloomington Ice Garden.

The host names the Fargo-Moorhead CVB Housing Bureau, booked through EventConnect, as the booking system. The Moorhead record covers 13 age levels from Nov 20, 2026 to Jan 24, 2027.

Two Play Hockey events say more. The Spring Stampede page says: "All visiting teams are required to stay at one of the sponsoring hotels." The host ends that sentence with an exclamation mark, which we left off here.
The Rivalry Cup page says: "This is a Stay To Play (STP) event. All participating teams/individuals that live outside of an hour are considered a travel participant and must follow the event STP policy, unless otherwise approved by the event director." It adds: "Should a team/individual decide that they do not want to stay in our approved hotels there is an opt-out fee."
MYHockey Tournaments (2 events)
The host rule for both: "As a condition of acceptance to the tournament, all out-of-town teams MUST reserve rooms through MYHockey Tournaments and stay in an authorized hotel at tournament rates." The page also says: "A minimum of 24 room nights is mandatory (e.g., 12 rooms x 2 nights = 24 room nights)."
The host defines who is out of town: "Any team whose home rink is more than 70 miles from the tournament rink will be considered an out-of-town team".
The host also states the consequences: "Failure to comply will result in expulsion from the tournament, and registration fees will not be refunded." It adds: "Teams that do not meet this requirement will be ineligible for semi-final or championship play during the tournament." Read the host page for the full wording.

- NAPHL SHOW Blaine Showcase, Dec 18 to 21, 2026. Host page, checked Oct 15, 2026.
What does unclear mean on our pages?
Unclear means the host lists hotels or says nothing about lodging, but states no rule. We have 230 of those in Minnesota hockey as of Oct 15, 2026.
It is not a polite way of saying required. It is also not a way of saying you are free to book anywhere. It means the host page does not answer the question.
One example is the NSC All American Girls Hockey Tournament (Nov 5 to 8, 2026). Its page links to a general National Sports Center hotels page, which says teams must book an Official Host Hotel "to be eligible to participate in either tournament," but does not name the events, so we marked this one unclear.
Parents should ask the tournament director before booking. The required count could change if hosts clarify.
What do suggested and not required look like?
Suggested is the biggest group after unclear, at 108 events as of Oct 15, 2026. Typical host wording is a preferred or sponsor hotel list, with no requirement stated.
Examples of what hosts wrote: "Albert Lea Hockey's Preferred Hotels" and, on other pages, "These sponsors are very generous supporters of our program and we ask that you contact them for all your lodging needs."
One record is marked not required: the City on the Bay Tournament from Walker Youth Hockey, which has dates on Dec 11 to 13, 2026, Jan 8 to 11, 2027 and Jan 22 to 24, 2027. The host wrote: "Teams may select any hotel, but only Chase on the Lake supports Walker Youth Hockey through a marketing agreement" Here is the event page.
What should a parent do with this?
Check your event first, then read the host rule, then ask your manager. Do that before you pay for a room.
- Find your event on our tournaments page and open the host page we link.
- Compare the quote above to what your team manager tells you.
- If the page is unclear, email the organizer and keep the reply.
- Ask about the cancellation window before you pay. Our cancellation guide has the questions.

Frequently asked questions
Do Minnesota youth hockey tournaments make you book the hotel block?
Some do. In our data on Oct 15, 2026, 19 of 358 live Minnesota youth hockey tournaments are marked required. The other 339 are suggested (108), not required (1) or unclear (230).
What does unclear mean on a TourneyTrip page?
The host lists hotels or says nothing about lodging, but states no rule either way. We do not read that as required and we do not read it as not required. Ask the host in writing.
Which Minnesota tournaments have a stay-to-play rule?
The required list covers Bloomington Jefferson, Moorhead, Play Hockey, MYHockey Tournaments and NAPHL events. Each one is below with the host rule quoted and a link to the host page.
Do the required rules apply to every team?
Only the host can say. The Gopher State pages define out-of-town teams as those more than 70 miles from the rink, Bloomington defines them as 75 or more miles from its rink, and Rivalry Cup Minnesota lets the event director approve other cases. Ask the organizer in writing.
